Follower of Theodor van Thulden (1606-1669), 'The Judgement of Salomon', 17thC, oil on panel, 88 x 120 cm

The label to the back refers to Theodor van Thulden, of whom a similar work, painted on copper, is known. Peter Paul Rubens was an important inspiration for the work by Van Thulden. The great Baroque master also has a similar composition to the present work. The original piece by Rubens' hand was destroyed in Brussels in 1695 due to a bombardment by the French army. Another version is now part of the collection of the National Gallery of Copenhagen.

  • Condition: - the horizontal connections of the different parts of the panel strengthened with cubes, the front areas logically overpainted
    - cleaned and restored
    - strongly overpainted areas all over the work, mostly to the faces of the figures
