After Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640), The Triumph of the Eucharist over Blindness and Ignorance, ca. 1700, oil on canvas

Isabella of Austria, Archduchess of the Southern Netherlands, commissioned Rubens to design a series of 20 tapestries on the theme of 'The Triumph of the Eucharist'. By the end of 1627, Rubens had completed his designs for the Brussels tapestries. In the copy after the orignal design in our auction, a personification of the Church sits on a triumphal chariot, crushing the 'Enemies of the Church'. Blindness and Ignorance are being led away captive.
