Léon De Smet (1881-1966), Interior with the spouse of the artist, oil on canvas

Painter Léon De Smet divorced his first wife Maria Willems in 1934. In 1941, De Smet entered into a second marriage with Claire Verzele. From that year on he made a series of portraits of Claire.
The painting refers also to some noticeable works of contemporaries and friends, i.c. the charcoal drawing by Constant Permeke and the sculpture of George Minne.
Signed 'Leon De Smet' in the left lower corner.
