Bart Gielen, Untitled (Cherry), 25 x 34 cm

" The drawing is a combination of several photo references and is a composition of figurative and abstract elements."
— Bart Gielen

Bart cleverly combines existing visual material that comes in via the net, print media and his own archive. He puts worlds together until they sparkle. This gathering is not without obligation. Monumental and the controlled play of light, dark and colour make him a plastic storyteller, not of a simple story, but of beautiful, unfathomable riddles. He turns the familiarity and recognisability of the visual material into an alienating drama. Perspectives are sharpened, contrasts exploited. These are possible worlds, from a dream phase, or from a heated imagination.
— Frederik Van Laere

"The cherry sculpture is a difficult object for me to work on as a draughtsman. That is why I made a logical choice and chose what I consider to be a traditional execution. It is a drawing made on a wood panel that has been coated with a white gesso layer, after which grey and red were added as a basis with pastel chalk. On top of that, a charcoal drawing was made in which the cherry plays an important role. The drawing is a combination of several photo references and is a composition of figurative and abstract elements. For me, the work is a balance between peace and chaos, transience and eternity, nothing and everything, ... I leave a definitive answer to the viewer."
— Bart Gielen
