Circle of Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669), tronie of a bearded man in exotic garb, oil on canvas, 17thC

The execution and the typical subject of the Old Testament protagonist in exotic garb, making a judging gesture while captured by the dramatic play of light, places this work in the immediate circle of Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn.
Rembrandt's school has countless known and unknown names. Given the high quality of the execution of the work here, this is probably a figure close to the grand master. Similar works are known by Jan Lievens (1607-1674), Govet Flinck (1615-1660), Ferdinand Bol (1616-1680), Aert de Gelder (1645-1727), Karel van der Pluym (1625-1672), and Jacques de Rousseaux (1600-1638).

The relined verso of the canvas has a collector's mark 'V.C.' and the inscription 'Ecole de Rembrandt.
