A finely cast Chinese gilt bronze figure of Bodhisattva of Avalokiteshvara or Guanyin, cast seated in padmasana holding on a raised lotus base, with a serene expression with downcast eyes, wearing an openwork crown centred with seated figures of Amitabha Buddha, the separate bronze pedestal stand is cast with rows of lotus leaves supported on a hexagonal base cast with crashing waves, Ming period, Total H 61,5 cm

Dimensions and Weight:
Figure, H 37,5 cm - largest W 23,3 cm - bottom surface 23,3 x 21,5 cm - Weight about 9,9 kg

  • Condition: - The lotus base appears in our opinion not original to the bronze figure: marriage between the base and figure.
    - Some broken and missing parts: the ribbon from behind the ears to the shoulders and two tips of the crown.
    - The back with casting flaws: visible as lines or wavering edges, only at the back of the figure. These wavering edges are seemingly caused by a misrun of metal liquid where a thin skin is created when liquid metal seeps between closed joints of the mould. Possible restorations were not detected.
    - Gilt loss all over the figure and pedestal.

Otherwise, no further remarks regarding the condition.
