A 16thC Brussels wall tapestry depicting a battle scene, ca 1575-1585, 186 x 306 cm

The city mark BB is preserved on the backside of the tapestry. The weaver's mark is missing.
The narrative scenes to the border, which is decorated with the allegorical figures of Diana and Apollo and the allegorical animal scenery with Latin tituli, relate the tapestry to the workshop of the Brussels weaver Frans Geubels.

The tapestry was part of a larger series (probably a set of 10) and possibly depicts Cyrus the Great, which was a popular theme.

  • Condition: In good and hangable condition.
The tapestry is lined on the reverse with velcro for hanging purposes.
Overall stable condition. It would benefit from professional cleaning and consolidation.
    Ca 6 warp threads/cm
Several old restorations (mainly to the silk parts) and touch-ups.
Some joints between the colours need to be fixed.
Some parts with loose warp threads and missing weft threads.
