A 17th/18th-century ivory and whale ivory Indo-Portuguese figure depicting 'The Good Sheperd', H 17,3 cm - total weight 33 g (+)

Carved ‘en ronde bosse' out of two pieces. Christ is shown as a boy tending to sleep and sitting with crossed legs, holding and caressing a lamb lying in his lap. The tall layered fountain-like sculpted plinth symbolizes the fountain of life and is set with various lambs and vegetation. In a grotto to the lower part, or the lying penitent Mary Magdalene or otherwise Saint Catherine of Alexandria (associated with Goa because it was on her name day in 1510 that the Portuguese took possession of the city) and left and right two lions in a grotto as well. Similar ivories are found in collections such as the V&A and the MET. The representation of Christ as ‘Good Shepherd' is a common subject in Indo-Portuguese ivories and seems unique to Goa.
