A Carrara marble torso of a resting satyr, Italian or French school, H 92 cm (torso)

On a black lacquered metal and wooden base.

The model of the satyr is well-known and can be traced back to an original type of resting satyr introduced by Praxiteles. Several Roman copies can be found in museum collections.
We refer to the sculpture in the Louvre Collections, with ref. NIII 2660, Ma 664.

Provenance:
The torso was acquired in 1989 by the present family from the reputed antique dealer Jean-Paul Meulemeester (Brussels).
Height of the torso: 92 cm (36.2 in.), incl. base and mount: 185 cm (72.8 in.)

  • Condition: In our opinion, it is in fine condition.
    Old restorations to the head of the pardalide (panther pelt) and to the drapery on the right hip.
    Wear, chips and scratches to the marble surface.
    Wear to the metal and wooden base.
