A carved ivory elephant tusk, Loando, West Africa, 19th century, outer arch tusk 64 cm (+)

Similar examples are in the Metropolitan Museum NY, Royal Museum of Greenwich, etc.
Provenance: Former Belgian collection.


This carved elephant tusk was produced on the Loango coast, between Cape Lopez and the Zaire River (Congo), West Africa. Loango carvers made it in the late 19th century. Depending on the size, the carving of a single tusk can take between two and sixteen months. Using iron
tools, it was carved in a spiral pattern with scenes from West African life.

  • Condition: Some damage to the bottom edge of the tusk.
