A fine Empire Griotte and gilt bronze mantle clock, signed 'Bailly à Paris', H 45 - W 23,5 cm

With a ‘Mouvement de Paris', working with a thread suspension.

The Parisian clockmaker Bailly (d. after 1818) was one of the finest of his day and as such earned the title of 'Clockmaker to Their Imperial and Royal Majesties'. Working from rue de Richelieu he was with Lepaute one of the main suppliers to the Garde-Meuble. Bailly, who retired in 1818 had the responsibility of maintaining the clocks at Compiègne and the Trianons and is known to have used cases by the leading Parisian bronziers including Pierre-Philippe Thomire and Claude Galle as well as Ferdinand Schwerdfeger.

Provenance: former collection of MD Michel Depondt, the head of the renowned Chronos Antique Gallery in Bruges.

  • Condition: - crack in the enamelled dial to 'no. 60'
    - the top star (above the dial) is not gilded (worn-off)
    - clumsily stamped number to the right side of the bronze mount on the plinth
    - furthermore in fine condition.
