A Flemish triptych retable of the Legends of Saint Anne, Mother of the Virgin Mary, mid 16thC

This travel altarpiece, when opened, reveals a carved giltwood shrine containing the central scene, a polychrome oak group of Saint Anne with the Virgin and Child, flanked by two wing panels depicting scenes from the lives of Joachim and Anne. When closed, this triptych shows the Annunciation theme.

According to an apocryphal text, Mary's parents, Joachim and Anne, had remained childless into old age. After Joachim's offering at the temple was rejected for this reason, the angel Gabriel appeared to him in the wilderness to announce that his wife would soon bear a child. At this news, the two tenderly embraced at the city's gate.

Dimensions: H 77,5 - W 53 - 104 cm (closed - opened) - D 17 cm

  • Provenance:
Part of the exposition 'Cinq Siècles d'Art' in 1935 in Brussels (label on the back). The retable was in this period in the collection of Baron Joly.
  • Condition: - the wing panel retouched 'à tratteggio'
    - The piece as a whole appears to be a composition of 16th-century and 19th-century elements. The shrine with the gilded Gothic elements is almost certainly of the 19th century. The side panels and the central sculpture are 16th-century, although it is not certain that they were 'created' together. The side panels are heavily overpainted, visible with UV but also with the naked eye. On the back of the work, reference is made to an exhibition from 1935 and to the collection of Baron Joly.
