A Japanese ivory netsuke of Hakuzosu (a fox priest), Edo period (late 18th/early 19thC), H 7,5 cm - 21,5g (+)

According to legend, kitsune (foxes) are said to possess supernatural powers, including the ability to change shape. It is said they like to wrap themselves in lotus leaves and transform themselves into poor priests, tricking people into giving them food and money. Hakuzosu is the name of a popular kitsune character who shapeshifted into a priest in the Kyogen play Tsurigitsune.
With the hooded fox-trickster slyly looking back, this netsuke perfectly embodies his duplicitous nature and foul intent.

Himotoshi on the back: one larger to accommodate the knot.
Black stained engraving, natural and worn patina with age cracks to the material.
