A Japanese lacquered and painted wooden Onnamen Noh-mask, signed, Edo period (1603-1868), H 21 cm

'Onnamen', Noh masks representing women, divide broadly into three types: young, middle-aged, and old, each of which includes examples of 'normal' and of 'heightened' states of being. The young woman's masks have blackened upper teeth slightly exposed between smiling red lips, full cheeks, rectangular pupil openings, high-set eyebrows and black hair with a white band at the centre part. They are classified into many subtly distinct characters, each with a name and personality, and used in regulated ways according to the traditions of each school of noh actors.

  • Condition: - damage to the lacquer on the face, cracks on and around the nose and lips
    - damage to the paint of the hair
    - in our opinion, the item is in acceptable condition
