A Japanese late Edo / early Meiji period lively sculpted ivory okimono showing a Rakan, signed, H 14,9 cm - 209g (+)

Rakans being ascetics, guarding and proclaiming Buddhist law on earth in the period between the death of the historical Buddha, and the coming of Maitreya, the Buddha of the Future. They inspired Japanese sculptors to cut some of the most lively depictions of the human figure in Japanese art.
