A Japanese Nanban lacquer chest for the Portuguese market, urushi lacquered ground, relief (taka) maki-e decorated with a continuous scene of a pair of geese by a pond, the arched cover with a ditto decoration of a rooster in a meadow, the inside with gold sprinkles, late Momoyama/ early Edo period, L 44,5 - H 26,3 cm

  • Condition: The chest appears overall in acceptable condition, with the following remarks usual to the type and age:
    - a long horizontal crack at the cover top
    - some losses of lacquer along the corners and edges
    - some wear to the lacquer here and there
    - repatched and retouch all over (patches/spots of restorations to the lacquer)
