A Limoges enamel bowl (19thC) and 2 Limoges enamel plaques, (16thC), H 4,2 / 12,5 x 7,5 cm

A lobed Limoges painted enamel bowl, depicting the profile portrait of the Spartan king Menelaus and the inscription 'Menelas' in grisaille with gilt details, monogrammed I.C. 1542, surrounded by a floral-patterned decoration on a white ground, the reverse on a ditto black ground with raised flower leaves, the bottom with a coat of arms, on copper, presumably 19thC, H 4,2 cm

Two Limoges painted enamel plaques, partly gilt, on copper, depicting the allegory of sculpture and the allegory of architecture in a medallion enamel frame, monogrammed I.R., dated 1539, presumably 16thC, 12,5 x 7,5 cm

  • Condition: - The bowl:
The date is backdated, the monogram I.C. suggest an attribution to Jean de Court who was active between 1555 - 1565
An old restauration to the top rim has loosened and has been fixated with tape
Wear and scratches to the bottom
Cracks in the enamel layer of the portrait
Chips and restorations all around the top rim

    - The two plaques:
The signature I.R. relates to Jean Reymond (died 1602–3) which is in our opinion not correct considering the date on the plaque is 1539. Jean Reymond was active in the late 16thC.

    The allegory of sculpture:
Large restoration to the top right corner, restoration to the left corner
Chip of the enamel to the large sculptural figure
Quite some cracks to the enamel

    The allegory of architecture:
Top left corner: a large part of the enamel missing
Restorations to the bottom corner, and to the skirt of the allegory and the architectural detail. Cracks all over.
