A Limoges enamel bowl, depicting the profile portrait of Menelaus, H 4,2 cm

A lobed Limoges painted enamel bowl, depicting the profile portrait of the Spartan king Menelaus and the inscription 'Menelas' in grisaille with gilt details, monogrammed I.C. 1542, surrounded by a floral-patterned decoration on a white ground, the reverse on a ditto black ground with raised flower leaves, the bottom with a coat of arms, on copper, presumably 19thC, H 4,2 cm

  • Condition: The date is backdated, the monogram I.C. suggest an attribution to Jean de Court who was active between 1555 - 1565
    An old restauration to the top rim has loosened and has been fixated with tape
    Wear and scratches to the bottom
    Cracks in the enamel layer of the portrait
    Chips and restorations all around the top rim
