A Limoges enamel plate, depicting Circe changing Ulysses' men to swine, monogrammed PC, presumably 19thC, ø 19,5 cm

A Limoges painted grisaille enamel dish, with flesh tones and partly gilt, on copper, the well depicting 'Circe changing Ulysses' men to swine' within an egg-and-dart frieze, the reverse decorated with a coat of arms showing three lilies, the reverse border decorated with strapwork and scrolling foliage, monogrammed PC (Pierre Courteys?), after the engravery 'Ulyssis soci a Circe in porcos', plate 135 of the series Antonio Tempesta illustrated for the 'The Metamorphoses of Ovid', 1606, the plate presumably 19thC, ø 19,5 cm

  • Condition: The signature P.C. relates to Pierre Courteys (died before 1581), which is in our opinion, not correct.
The series of engravings 'the Metamorphoses of Ovid', by Antonio Tempesta is printed in 1606.

In our opinion in good condition, with the following remarks:
    - small and negligible 'perforations' or lacunes in the top layer all over
    - quite some restoration to the skirt of the human with boar head, the head of the boar, and the drapery
    - part of the white edge on the plate missing (to the right side)
    - wear to the gilt decoration
