A sandstone window 'Ceppo Gentile', Northern Italy, 15thC, 42 x 30 cm

The central area of this window is carved in openwork. Medieval inspiration is suggestive for the originality, essentiality and balance of the composition. Windows of this type were designed to give light and air to passageways, such as entrance halls, corridors or stairways. They are the ancestors of the 'mandorlati', the terracotta fretworks typical of northern Italian architecture.
