A very imposing Rococo style rhinoceros mantel clock, the dial signed 'Le Faucheur, Paris', H 77 - W 39 cm

This very imposing patinated and gilt bronze rhinoceros mantel clock is a great copy of the 18thC Rococo Parisian originals. The patinated bronze rhinoceros, presented on an exuberant vaulted Rococo style base, is supporting the gilt bronze clock case, surrounded by oak branches and acorns. On top sits a young man with an elephant hat and a lion, as an allegory of the African continent.

The dial is marked 'Le Faucheur, Horlogier du Roi, Paris', a very important 18thC Parisian clockmaker. The inside mechanism is marked 'A.D. Mougin', a well-known French clockmaker working in the mid to late nineteenth century. The gilt bronze part between the rhino and the clock is stamped 'CH RS'.

Provenance: Part of the Rozenfeld Collection
