An exceptional 'Commode à la Régence', stamped Guillaume Schwingkens, ca. 1735, H 85 - W 132 - D 68 cm

A very imposing rosewood veneered 'Commode à la Régence', the wavy front and curved sides are decorated with parquetry of rosewood, covered with ormolu mounts and a 'Brèche d'Alep' marble on top, stamped 'G. Schwingkens', H 85 - W 132 - D 68 cm

Guillaume Schwingkens was a cabinetmaker of German origin who came to Paris at the time of the Regency, probably in the 1720s and obtained his master's degree, probably at the beginning of the reign of Louis XV. He settled in rue du Faubourg Saint Antoine then, around 1745, rue de Charonne. He would have died around 1760. We mainly find chests of drawers, corner cupboards and sloping desks bearing his stamp. Several of his masterpieces are part of the collection of the Louvre in Paris.
