An exceptional Louis XVI marble and ormolu mantle clock, signed 'Robin à Paris', ca. 1780, H 64 - W 55 cm

Carrara and noir Belge marble mantle clock with ormolu mounts and figures of beauties and a cupid holding flower garlands. The base with a central bronze basso-relievo frieze depicting putti in a garden setting, flanked by floral decorations hand-painted on the Carrara marble. The enamelled dial is signed 'Robin à Paris' and indicates the hour, date and current day.

Robert Robin (1742-1799 or 1809) became master in 1767 and was one of the most important Parisian horologists of the last third of the 18th century. He received the honorary titles of Valet de Chambre-Horloger Ordinaire du Roi et de la Reine in 1783 and 1786. He enjoyed an extraordinary career, distinguishing himself by his exceptional contribution toward the improvement of time-measuring instruments.

Provenance: important Flemish private collection.

  • Condition: - quite some wear to the ormolu
    - chips and scratches to the edges of the marble parts
    - no pendulum swing included
    - right wind-up hole of the dial with a chip
    - furthermore, the clock appears in fair condition
