An exceptional polychrome painted walnut sculpture of Bridget of Sweden, late 15thC, Southern Germany, H 58 cm

The Holy Bridget is dressed as the Mother Superior of the sisters of Cistercians, founded by Saint Benedict. She is holding the book with the rule of Saint Benedict as an attribute.

Germany, probably Lake Constance (Bodensee), late 15thC.

A similar sculpture is mentioned in the work 'Statuaire Médiévale en France de 1400 à 1530' by Jacqueline Boccador on page 405.

  • Condition: - weared all over
    - the base damaged
    - polychrome paint is mostly original but with overpaint and restoration details all over
    - touch-ups to the face
    - the left arm missing
    - traces of woodworm (mostly to the back)
    - furthermore, in our opinion, the item appears in acceptable to good condition.
