An exceptional William & Mary longcase clock by John Barnett, Lothbury, London, ca. 1690-1700, H 212 cm

William & Mary era (1689-1702), oak case veneered with walnut and inlaid with floral marquetry of holly, three train, weight driven, eight-day time, hourly striking and quarterly chiming on a nest of cupped bells, longcase clock, made by John Barnett, Lothebury (Lothebury is a short street just north of City Center London), London, made circa 1690-1700.

Provenance: Flemish private collection.

  • Condition: - Case: Appears to be in very good condition except for the addition of a base that is stylistically wrong for the William & Mary period. Normally there would be a broad or stepped moulded base, but this clock has ogival ebonized bracket feet, either added aftermarket or carved from the ebonized base that was originally on the bottom of the case. (Definitely out of the correct Period since ogee bracket feet are Chippendale findings typical of the later 18th century). Furthermore some cracks to the veneer to the top part of the door
    - Dial: In very good clean condition for the era circa 1690-1700, the minute hand broken into two pieces
    - Movement: Not seen nor evaluated, but the assumption of originality was made as stated above regarding being original genuine and functional.
