An extremely subtle sculpted Japanese ivory jewellery box, signed Tohekido Yoshikazu, Meiji period, H 13 - 20 x 14,3 cm - 1187 g (+)

The cover is intricately carved in openwork relief with numerous quail amongst berry thickets; the border with meandering motive and the sides and base with a pattern simulating straw wickerwork. The corners of the box are supported by quail and wheat feet, the interior decorated in gold-speckled black lacquer. Signed on a mother-of-pearl plaque on the cover Tohekido Yoshikazu.

Provenance: from a private collection in Belgium. This item is included in the commissioned private catalogue, titled 'The Nibajama collection', item no. 232

  • Condition: Given the delicacy of the work, the item appears in our opinion in fairly good condition, with the following remarks:
    - one of the inner sides of the box with a crack / the same for the inside of the cover
    - as far as we can see, the five little holes visible at the border waves of the cover could show some missing parts. This is only an opinion.
    - near the neck of the quail left of the signature plaque, in our opinion, a piece is missing.
