An ivory 'memento mori' skull, 19thC, D 12,7 - W 7,5 cm - 552 g (+)

With a movable lower jaw. Although replicas of skulls were often kept as reminders of the imminence of death, the obsessive, anatomically correct detailing of this skull-both inside and out-suggests that it was intended for the cabinet of exotica.

Provenance: from a private collection in Belgium. This item is included in the commissioned private catalogue, titled 'The Nibajama collection', item no. 230

(+) CITES certificate for commercial activities inside the EU, no. 2023/BE00298/CE

  • Condition: - except for some traces of oxidation at the joints of the lower jaw, the item in our opinion is in a fairly good condition
    - as it is very difficult to determine a region for the item we can't label it whether as European or as Japanese
