Attributed to Jasper van der Lanen (1585-1634), 'Christ and the Pilgrims of Emmaus', oil on copper, Antwerp, ca 1615

Jasper van der Lanen, or van der Laanen, born in Antwerp in 1585 and died in Antwerp in 1634, is a Flemish painter of the Baroque age.
He was a pupil of Nicolaas Geerts in 1607 and became a member of the guild of Saint-Luc in Antwerp in 1615. He married Elisabeth Roumbouts in 1624 at the Saint-Joris church and the painter Abraham Govaerts was his best man. He worked in the studio of the latter and will take it over after the death of Govaerts. The two painters are best known for their landscapes, but van der Lanen differs from his teacher and friend by the treatment of foliage.
