Emile Claus (1849-1924), 21 x 44 cm

Attributed to Emile Claus, 'the Rekkelingen' the shores of the Lys at dawn (l'heure bleue), an oil sketch on canvas, posthumously signed lower left by another hand, 21 x 44 cm

  • Condition: - To complete the information on the painting: the work was seen by the experts of the 'Museum of Deinze and the Leie Region', and they concluded that the work indeed could probably be an original, be it an unsigned oil sketch by Emile Claus, that was later signed by another hand. This is very common in the oeuvre of Emile Claus. After his death, unsigned sketches of Claus's 'fond d'atelier' were often posthumously signed to increase their value. Please note that the museum conclusions are, as usual, with some restraint and cannot be considered a certainty. As this is the case, we as auctioneers can also in no way guarantee that the item is indeed an original by Emile Claus.
    - The banks on the opposite side of the canal: at various spots, the pictorial layer is flaking, and some spots have been restored.
    - The lower middle edge of the painting (near to the signature): some flaking of the pictorial layer and some clumsy overpaint.
    - A spot to the left under the 'C' of the signature: missing paint and clumsily applied overpaint.
    - To start with, the painting could use some cleaning but it needs a severe check-up and some restorations should be redone.
    - Furthermore, in our opinion, the work is in a hangable condition.
