Esther fainting in front of Ahasuerus, Flemish School, 17thC, oil on canvas, 115 x 117cm

After the king ordered the execution of all Jewish people in the Persian Empire, Esther went before him, without being summoned, to beg him to spare her people. This broke court etiquette and Esther risked death in doing so. She ended up fainting before the king Ahasuerus.

  • Condition: Heavily restored and esp. the faces overpainted. Stiched crack visible in the linnen canvas running horizontally from the left to the right side. Some pigment loss in the cloak of the right standing figure.
    Relined canvas and new chassis.
    In moderate condition and hangable.
