Left Bank Bordeaux

2015 – Château Léoville Poyferré, Red (1,50 L. = Magnum)
Saint-Julien, 2ième Grand Cru Classé, Bordeaux, France

The 2015 Leoville Poyferre is medium to deep garnet colored. It needs a fair bit of coaxing to unlock notes of blueberry pie, kirsch, and blackcurrant pastilles, plus touches of garrigue, potpourri, and dusty soil. The medium-bodied palate is very tightly wound and youthful still, delivering a frame of firm, ripe tannins and tons of freshness, finishing long and earthy.

2017 – Château Talbot, Red (6 x 0,75 L.)
Saint-Julien, 4ième Grand Cru Classé, Bordeaux, France

Deep crimson colour and beautifully fragrant in the nose, Talbot is more approchable than usual. There is good intensity and spice, with fragrant violets and cassis. This is not a blockbuster, just very well made and elegant. A classic Talbot and a very good St. Julien with lots of charm inspite of the firm tannic structure.

2015 – Château Phélan Ségur, Red (2 x 1,50 L. = Magnum)
Saint-Estephe, 2ième Grand Cru Classé, Bordeaux, France

A blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon and 47% Merlot aged in 50% new oak, this is certainly one of the best Saint Estèphes in 2015. It has impressive fresh fruit flavours of blackberry, crunchy plums and red fruit compote. Picked late, the wine has certainly benefitted from the ripe fruit and the round, supple tannins. Classic structure and good length in the finish.
