Instead of the usual hands, a rotating central plate with a fixed hand indicates the hour. The dial is incorporated into a vanitas painting on copper depicting the fleetingness and the intrinsic lie of beauty and love. Time is represented as an old goat-legged man, Venus or beauty as a female figure, dead as a skeleton, and Invidia (envy) as an old snake hair-dressed woman. Putti as a representation of love are holding the dial. At the reverse, the painting bears a painted inscription telling 'Hubert pinxt. 1664'. The (original) winding key is present in a hidden drawer in the frame. The frame itself is built in a typical 17th-century geometric style with ripple wood moulding.

  • Condition: As far as we can judge, the item is in good condition.
We didn't check the functioning of the mechanism but according to the formal owner, it is in good condition.
