Raf Vandewalle, Enas Kyklos Tetragonon (A circle of squares), 40 x 40 x 40 cm (110 cm incl. stem)

"The square is a product of man, the cherry comes from nature. Square and cherry: a design of man combined with the fruit of nature, radiant, sober and ordered."
— Raf Vandewalle

Raf Vandewalle was born in 1943 and studied at the Hoger Sint-Lukasinstituut in Ghent.

Initially, Raf Vandewalle made compositions within the square. At first, he did this with many circular curved lines, later only with straight lines in order to arrive at the essence, namely the square. Since 1975, the square has been his only element of composition. Vandewalle's works are an ode to order, not only through the strict limitation of forms, but also through the reduction of colour. Constructions according to clear laws and clarity of the overall picture are leading principles. Since 1985, the relationship between the plane and the space has also been realised in his works.

"My works are usually given a Greek title. The sound of this classical language is so beautiful and at the same time I pay tribute to the beauty of Greek art.

An artist does well to remain true to his own style. That is why, for this commission, I did not deviate from my narrow track of visual forms. My most important element of construction is the square. This has been the case since 1975.

With a series of squares, I add a surplus that turns the cherry into art. My intervention is minimal.

By fitting and measuring, I have allowed the concept to grow. It consists of 36 squares of 3 by 3 cm that form a circle around the cherry that runs parallel to the supporting surface.

Each module has all the ingredients of a classical painting: canvas is the support and acrylic paint the material.

The square is a product of mankind, the cherry comes from nature. Square and cherry: a design of man combined with the fruit of nature, radiant, sober and ordered.

I love the result and hope the viewer can enjoy it just as much!"
