Studio of Abraham Janssens (1567-1632), Flora and Bacchus, oil on canvas

Bacchus raises his flute glass of wine and tries to seduce the proud-looking Flora, surrounded by an abundance of exotic fruits and vessels. The scene takes place in a wooded landscape with hills.

Abraham Janssens was one of the most important Antwerp artists in the early 17thC. Until the return of Rubens to Antwerp in 1608, Janssens was even considered the best history painter of his time. His travels to Italy were of great importance for his style, which shows strong influences by the 'chiaroscuro' of Caravaggio. He was also a prominent member of the Guild of Romanists, a society of notables and artists from Antwerp who had visited Rome.

No visible signature, the back of the frame with an export label 'Via Rotterdam'.
