'The Lamentation of Christ', an oak altarpiece group in a 15th-century style, 62,5 x 49 cm

The sculpture, carved in a sole block of wood, is inspired by the work of the Flemish Primitives. The lifeless body of Christ is resting in his mother's lap, standing behind her and encouragingly holding her by the shoulder, is a weeping Saint John the Evangelist, left of the Virgin and resting his hand on Christ's head, Nicodemus; kneeling at the feet of the Lord an unknown female companion expressing her quiet grief; standing at the right a subdued Maria Magdalen and at her left an also unknown and disheartened female; left on top two (soldiers) in a mountainous landscape.
Notwithstanding a copy / pastiche (possibly 19th century), in its totality and certainly in the expression of the figures, the image undoubtedly has the appearance of a 15th-century original.

  • Condition: Apart from the (minor) cracks inherent and due to the working of the wood, the item in our opinion is in a good condition
