The portrait of Jossine Zannekin-de Wulf at the age of 60, 1632, Southern Netherlands, oil on oak, 69,5 x 88 cm

Dated and with mention of the age to the left top corner: 'AETATIS SUAE 60, 1632'.

This painting was purchased in July 1928 by baron Jean van Caloen from Bruges in a gallery of old paintings in Blankenberge. He thought he recognized the coat of arms of Caloen in the coat of arms to the top right corner (leopard lion in the background of ermine), but this turned out to be a mistake. The weapon is the alliance weapon Zannekin–de Wulf, more about that later. Recognizing his mistake, Jean van Caloen had the coat of arms painted over and, curiously, also had the lady's age changed to 60, for unknown reasons. There is, however, an old black-and-white photo of the painting before this procedure.

Based on the alliance weapon, the lady should most likely be identified as Jossine Zannekin-de Wulf. The Zannekin family came from the region of Veurne and Ypres. The de Wulf family, or at least that particular branch of the family that carried that coat of arms, came from French Flanders.

  • Condition: - overpaint to the right top corner
    - quite some touch-ups to the face
    - some more overpaint all over
    - furthermore, the work appears in good condition.
