Workshop or circle of Peter Paul Rubens, 'Satyr and Nymph', first half of the 17thC, oil on panel, 74 x 103,5 cm

An impressive copy of 'Satyr and Nymph' by Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640). At least twenty copies of this scene were made in Rubens' studio. A version in Vienna (Schönborn-Buchheim collection) is assumed to be the original by the master himself.

The back of the panel with a 17thC Antwerp panel maker's mark. Similar stamps are dated between 1619 and 1638. The panel maker could not be identified.

Provenance: the back with an old label referring to 'Collection Mr Briens'

  • Condition: - the vertical connections of the panel with overpaint to the front
    - overpaint to the background
    - deformations of the panel
